A strong monitoring cell has been set up in the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to provide uninterrupted telecommunication services in the affected areas in the light of the existing flood situation in the country. Under the direct supervision of Commission Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder, a director of BTRC's Engineering and Operations Department and officials of the concerned departments and branches are managing the mobile network, optical fiber transmission system, internet service provider and bandwidth management in the flood affected area.
At present, a toll free number has been introduced at the initiative of BTRC to facilitate the activities of Bangladesh Army in flood affected areas. In addition, 20 mobile handsets have been provided by the Commission to facilitate this process. Field staff of BTRC licensed agencies are informing the Commission about the latest situation in the flood affected areas and are working to ensure effective telecommunication services under the guidance of the Monitoring Cell.

After inspecting the flood-hit areas on the spot, the BTRC said that the telecommunication infrastructure in Sunamganj, Sylhet and Netrokona has become almost unusable. The task of reactivating mobile network infrastructure has become challenging due to the free flow of water.
The commission said arrangements were underway to provide generators, optical fiber and adequate fuel to provide active network and uninterrupted internet services through the staff of concerned mobile operators, NTTN operators, ISP service providers and other organizations.
Sunamganj, Sylhet and Netrokona districts have been inundated due to heavy rains since Friday, June 17. Residents of the districts are in dire straits. There are a total of 2528 sites (BTS) of four mobile network operators in the area.

The 1159 sites in the flood-hit areas were cut off due to power outages, hampering access to mobile networks in the affected areas.
A total of 157 sites were reactivated by the evening of June 18 due to the efforts of mobile operators and efforts are being made to reactivate the remaining sites as well.
